"Alternative Cinema" Marathon: Final Details

In case someone checks here...

Rubin should have given most people a call, because he'll be picking up most to head to my place. If you weren't part of the carpool, hopefully you get my e-mail, message, something.

The guess I was offering later tonight stands: 10 am arrival time.

My spreadsheet of preferences / votes has been finalized; your rankings, from the film you wanted to watch the most to least, got 5 points, decreasing by 1 until your last choice equaled 1 point. They were summed, and the resulting values have determined the play order of the movies, with the highest number getting 1st showing, and progressing down from there.

If you're curious, here's the play order:

OSAMA
CHILDREN OF HEAVEN
THE BUBBLE
BROKEN WINGS
LATE MARRIAGE

For interest's sake, here's the order if I don't include Desu's preferences (I was debating about this, because she'll only be present for the first film):

THE BUBBLE
OSAMA
CHILDREN OF HEAVEN
BROKEN WINGS
LATE MARRIAGE

In the end, I included it because it wasn't earth-shattering--the top 3 movies got enough points to remain in the top 3 despite Desu's votes, changing only the order. That, and also because her first choice was OSAMA, and since she'll only be here for 1 movie, I didn't think she should watch THE BUBBLE. The rest of you will still get to see these top 3 (or more or less as you prefer / arrive) anyway, and these were by far the most sought films in the poll. So I think everyone wins!

Here's to hoping they don't disappoint. I'm looking forward to it! :)

"Alternative Cinema" Marathon #2: The Middle East!

All--IF THIS IS TO HAPPEN, I WILL NEED YOUR COOPERATION ASAP!! The projected date is VERY SOON! So please read the post--ALL OF IT!

Alright...these past few days, I have been watching movies galore! Thanks in large part to Boxing Day and my endless love of foreign / independent / small films, I've been kept quite busy. I've really taken the opportunity of no school to catch up on everything I've ever wanted to watch--an ongoing list that gets constantly updated as I continually dig and search for more.

THE PLAN:
DECEMBER 30th (for owscorpio--come!!)
There's a set of movies chosen out, of which we'd probably watch 2-3 (unless people seriously want to go for ALL 5!!). YOU will notify ME of your preferences, INCLUDING the amount you wouldn't mind watching (1-5), BY E-MAIL. This is for privacy's sake. Not to single anyone out, but some people have strong opinions about films (okay, okay, it's you, OB!), so I don't want it done in the comments. I don't expect a flame war at all to erupt amongst you, but we'll probably all silently judge. ;) ("She wants to watch the kid's film??" or something--yes, one of them, to my understanding, is probably like rated G).

You aren't required to be here for all of them. Judging by how many we'd watch, I'd set a start time for the event, and schedule the movies accordingly to your private votes. You can trust in my total neutrality, because regardless of what happens or even if this event runs, I'll be watching each film anyway. I just thought, "Why not let friends join me?" :D

Come for the whole thing, or come when you want. :) Maybe this is too loose to work, but we'll see.

IF IT'S A LONG EVENT, I HOPE FOR FOOD HELP, PLEASE (POTLUCK)!

DETAILS:
The last big movie thing at my place centered around Oscar Nominees. Well, I've come to think that that's too limiting--I've since seen plenty of great other films not given much or any recognition at all. On a dining out today with family, I used some of the time to come up with a new batch of films I'd like to watch, because yes, I've run through those at my disposal already, new or otherwise.

It just so happened that two I recalled I've really wanted to watch came from the Middle East--"Broken Wings" (Israel) and "Osama" (Afghanistan). So, I decided to just use it as a theme. With the help of IMDB's movies by ratings and countries list (my greatest weapon in finding reputable alternative cinema), I've secured 3 other films. All are within the top 20 most-rated-by-users movies of their respective nations (filtering out what I've already seen and the bad, of course--for example, quite a lot could have rated movie A, but if its score was below 7, it was cut). Choices were also influenced by availability at rental places.

THE MOVIES:
Here are the five candidates...

BROKEN WINGS............(Israel)
CHILDREN OF HEAVEN....(Iran)
LATE MARRIAGE...........(Israel)
OSAMA.....................(Afghanistan/Iran) NOT about Mr. bin Laden!
THE BUBBLE..............(Israel)

Why so many Israeli or Iranian films? Because they are hands-down the most stable and able to produce films, with a more or less "modern" industry (moreso Israel). No intention of excluding or particularly picking some nations, just the way things are.

SOME of these films appear to be centered on issues, rather than just drama / comedy / whatever. That may either be a turn on or turn off for you, so here are my impressions (it's a split): OSAMA is definitely issues-heavy. THE BUBBLE seems moderately concerned with issues (one singular review I heard called it romantic comedy, which is throwing me for a loop, even when most don't, so I dunno). LATE MARRIAGE is on the fence--I don't know how much they explore tradition and arranged marriages, or whether it's just a setup. The remaining appear more about the drama (BROKEN WINGS) or the comedy / drama (CHILDREN OF HEAVEN).

If it matters to you, CHILDREN OF HEAVEN would likely be the G-rated movie. For all else, be aware that there may be sex, violence, and nudity. We'll see to what extent, won't we?

Now...SEND ME YOUR E-MAILS ASAP! Hope this works out! :) Or if you need it, here are some brief plot synopses for the movies. I DO NOT know how reputable these are:

BROKEN WINGS
"Broken Wings" is a poignant, slice-of-life drama about an Israeli family's coming to terms with the death of their father nine months earlier. The widow, Dafna, is a 43 year-old mother of four who works endless hours as a midwife at the local hospital, both to earn money to support her family as well as to avoid having to face the reality of the tragic loss she has suffered. For while she is a loving, devoted mother, she seems unable to provide the guidance and solace her children need in this time of incomprehensible grief and suffering. Thus, the children are left to cope more or less on their own as best they can - and this on top of all the problems young people face just doing the ordinary, day-to-day business of growing up.

CHILDREN OF HEAVEN
The Children Of Heaven follows the relationship between an impoverished brother and sister, Ali and Zahra, who are thrust into a difficult circumstance all revolving around a pair of sneakers. How they choose to solve their problem themselves, without telling their parents, is what makes the story so heart-warming and unique. What follows is a tender, moving tale of compassion, determination, and deep family love.

LATE MARRIAGE
Zaza is a 31-year old Israeli bachelor, handsome and intelligent, and his family wants to see him married. But tradition dictates that Zaza has to choose a young virgin. She must be beautiful and from a good family, preferably rich. Zaza's parents, Yasha and Lily drag Zaza to meet potential brides and their families. Zaza has no choice. He plays along with his family, advocates of the suffocating traditions of their Georgian Jewish heritage. But Zaza always manages to somehow get out of being engaged. What his parents don't know is that Zaza is already in love. Judith is sensuous, strong and intriguing. She's also a divorcée with a 6-year-old daughter. So Zaza has kept Judith a secret from his family. He will have to choose between respect of the strict confines of family and tradition, or the love of his life.

OSAMA
A 12-year-old Afghan girl and her mother lose their jobs when the Taliban closes the hospital where they work. The Taliban have also forbidden women to leave their houses without a male "legal companion." With her husband and brother dead, killed in battle, there is no one left to support the family. Without being able to leave the house, the mother is left with nowhere to turn. Feeling that she has no other choice, she disguises her daughter as a boy. Now called 'Osama,' the girl embarks on a terrifying and confusing journey as she tries to keep the Taliban from finding out her true identity. Inspired by a true story, Osama is the first entirely Afghan film shot since the fall of the Taliban.

THE BUBBLE
The movie follows a group of young friends in the city of Tel Aviv and is as much a love song to the city as it is an exploration of the claim that people in Tel Aviv are isolated from the rest of the country and the turmoil it's going through. The movie looks at young people's lives in Tel Aviv through the POVs of gays and straights, Jews and Arabs, men and women. It all begins when Noam, a young Israeli soldier, serves in the reserve forces and meets at a check point a Palestinian young man called Ashraf. Following an incident during which Noam misplaces his ID card at the check point, Ashraf shows up on the doorstep of the apartment that Noam shares with a gay man and a straight woman. How will the meeting affect all of their lives?

Best gift EVAR! XD

First off, a hearty THANK YOU to Desu for hosting--this was a relatively hassle-free PC, and I must say that I thought it was a great success! Your place allowed for lots of space, comfort, and animals galore! Definitely exceeded all my expectations! :D

Now, to the topic of the post...I really must commend Twill and Nyx for the story--what a fantastic surprise!! I was honestly super excited to start reading it, and that's exactly what I did as soon as I got home! Bar none, I think this is the most creative, thoughtful, and just plain cool gift I've ever received! :)

The writing's hilarious, and I think you've got some very good observations and mannerisms for each of our characters! There were so many brilliant, little moments, tiny snatches of detail that really got a reaction from me (usually a hearty lol). Let me list a few, for my enthusiasm's sake:

-what a bystander would've done in a typical action hero to assist a hero, but no, I don't know that because I "prefer alternative cinema"
-the audience at Scorpio's performance--men with monocles!
-all of Rubin's sections--the Cups thing was ridiculously funny, and the random organic chemistry!
-OB clinging, starving, and exclaiming, "Spray away!" with the perfume called "Come Hither" (can't think of a better perfume title to relate to her)
-Desu's comments when she's experimenting with the origami were great, and little peaks into her family's dynamics were wonderful (the hoarding books, for example--that is so like most parents!)
-Nyx thinking of mauling a nature photographer!
-Starwing being the supernatural one--totally the one most tuned in with the mystical!
-Melody's characterization was spot on (especially the "Just kidding!")
-Kris's very random encounter and story with the rolling dude--so random and borderline absurd, perfect!
-Twill's gushing enthusiasm for superheroes, and Greek things!
-Cross's weird habits--checking in on her salad was genius!

And as a note--NO, I didn't know a lot of people in high school!! :P But yes, random people do comment on my name, haha.

Twill, I hope it wasn't modesty that prevented you from having your own glorious origins section! I was really looking forward to when you develop / discover your own powers, especially as the primary writer of the story! I'm glad Bei got fantastic segments, as co-creator and helper. :)

Can't say enough great things about this. Thanks for the laugh--it was all very heartwarming!

Tentatively, I am announcing--

that I'm able to drive to Desu's for PC.

The plan currently is that I'd be picking up Twill and Starwing.

Hopefully people will all be picked up by about 10:30 am. Then we head to Desu's!

I'd like one or both of my passengers to help look out for the landmarks and such as Desu provided, as soon as we take Crowchild North out of the city, to ensure we don't lose our way. This means that within the car, one copy of the directions and map would be fantastic! :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For the sake of simplicity, I (Rubin) am also taking this opportunity to announce that I will be picking up Scorpio, Obsidian and Nyx.
Hopefully I will have picked everyone up by 10:45AM and then we'll on our merry way to Duchess Nire's house on Hylia-Upon-the-Lake!
To people riding in my car: I already have maps and a copy of the directions, so just leave everything to me, buckle up, help me look for landmarks and not distract me.
See you Saturday morning!
Yeah I'm busting loose, I'm letting go / Out on this open road
It's Independence Day out on this lost highway...
Hey hey!
So, since we seem to have a date picked out (the 22nd), I'm wondering if there are any ideas on time of day or who can or can't do the drive. The weather seems pretty good, and with any luck it'll stay clear through the weekend. Positive thinking ahoy!
Anyhow, thought I'd get something up for discussion :)
Tuesday, December 11, 2007
Alright, so. We can do the 21st, which is open all day, or we can do the 22nd, in which case, people would need to leave by 6:30-7 PM.
Directions to my house:
-Head out of the city on Crowchild-- that's west. Or North, according to the signs, but it's really west.
-Pass Crowfoot, pass Stoney Trail, all the way out of the city. Another few roads you'll pass for landmark's sake are 12 Mile Coulee Road, and Bearspaw Road. When you pass the Bearspaw Gas station (on the left) start looking out for Lochend Rd
-Turn right onto Lochend Rd, also known as secondary HWY 766
-it's about 9 KM down the road to the next turn. The best landmark is a huge valley. After the valley it's the first left onto Glendale Road.
-It's a typical winding country road; you go up the hill, and then you go back down on the other side, and from there, turn left onto TWP 264. Mine is the white house with brown trim right ahead.
Happy Birthday !!!!!!!!
Okay, this is actually 1 date late for our Russian Queen, but it's on time for Starwing girl. At least that's what I'm going to call her. Happy 20th Birthday you guys. My sad unsuccessful attempts to call you guys failed miserably. Miserably miserably. And I left a pretty message on your phone, but after I finished, I remembered that you can't even access your voicemail because you lost the password. Oh woe. And then I remembered you guys don't even check this blog. But I just felt like putting it out there. T-4 days of doom.
PC TIEM NAO
Alright guys. I need to know what day and time you guys want Pseudo Christmas. Need to, need to, need to know.
Need to know.
Alright?
It's always a pain to get everyone together for things, and getting possible dates is like pulling teeth. But I'm not telling you where I live until you tell me when you want this to take place.
Also, volunteers for various foodstuffs? Snacks, dessert, meal type stuff?
I'm back!
Whee! I post again!
Nothing much is happening on my end. Except that I want someone to watch movies with this X-mas.
The gloves we use for dissection hates me. I think I'm allergic to them. Whenever I wear them, my skin becomes really dry and painful for 2-3 days afterwards. Once, it got so dry it bled. T-T So I'm avoiding gloves from now on, or at least wearing them inside out so the powerder doesn't attack me.
I miss you all. What day is everyone getting back?
Pseudo X-Mas Wishlist: Starwing
(Natrix is posting it for her, because she can't get into the blog?)
Hey everyone,
Since I can't access the blog (I read it though), I'm going to email out my list. If anyone has some time, could they post it on for me? I don't have much of a list anyway... Hm... And some of it might be very pricey, so just get me anything and I'll love it. Or invite me out to see the Golden Compass, muahahahaha.
List
-A comfortable fleecy blanket I can carry around the house, preferably with an 'Emily' design XP
-The Blue Planet: BBC documentary series about marine life
-A good dissecting microscope
-A color photograph-based atlas to animals in tropical forests (the more obscure the animals the better XD) - I don't have any books in mind, but I'm guessing they will be expensive because of the photographs... So don't go out and look for this exactly, just... if you come across one that looks promising...
-Photographs of rain forests - could be a calendar, a book or anything, as long as the pictures are nice and spooky-looking
-CDs of animal sounds or forests
-Guide books on how to use Poser, AutoCAD, After Effects, Photoshop - I trust your judgement ^^'
Others
-Any RPG computer games that look interesting
-Any board games
-Any good fantasy or sci fi books you could recommend
Thanks! I need to start shopping too... everyone's finished... X.X
Dance Dance
First off, I've been bad and I think I've infected my left ear. So woe is me.
Second of all, I am insanely jealous that my parents get to go see the Russian Ballet playing at the Jubilee. Insanely jealous. You know how good they are. Freaking good. And they're dancing Swan Lake. I think last year, I missed the Nutcracker too. Alas. But one day when the timing is right... I will be gazing in wonder at their gloriousness.
Another Addition!
Hey everyone,
I have a new addition to my wist list; it's a book that a friend of mine recommended and it looks pretty funky. It's:
Flocker, Micheal. The Metrosexual Guide to Style: A Handbook for the Modern Man. Da Capo Press, 2003.
Thanks everyone! As for me, I'm almost done my shopping! Hurrah!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DESUDESU!
Duh duh duh, and another one bites the dust!
Welcome to the wide world of the twenties! One more year to being legal EVERYWHERE!
May your day be full of niceness, with something fun waiting somewhere ready to leap out and hug you. Lots and lots of warm wishes from up yonder, and all about, on this day of your birth :D
...and I've gotta run to English. *zing*
HAPPY BIRTHDAY OSHI!!!!!!!!
At least I hope it's your official birthday. I am getting old and I was only alerted through facebook. Actually, I'm pretty sure it is your birthday! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!! Say goodbye to the teens and being an adult! But I'm sure you'll still get carded whereever you go. But be glad for your youthful figure and all that! Live it up wherever you are, and tell me the juicy details later. I wish you much happiness in the coming year. And hope that you ate lots and lots of cake.
Live long and Prosper!
Muchos Kisses and Hugs!
List Addition-->OB
Well if you've gotten me something already, that is fine. But for ppl who haven't gotten me something, I'm going to steal a line from Oshi, and ask for pretty pretty earings. I don't care what kind, cheesy ones, classy ones. If you're going to get me cheesy ones, make sure that I can still go out in public with them...I must start my earing collection!
And other small things that I can look at and think of you. Pretty girly things. Or maybe something related to Superman. Because he is Da Bomb.
Feed the poor!
I'm sure we've all heard of this somehow somewhere, the vocabulary game freerice.com
An international effort, it's a game that donates 10 grams of rice for each question you get correct. It made news when it amassed quite a bit of rice to be distributed.
Recently, I just finished a project dealing with poverty, and came to appreciate the seriousness of the issue. You know, something we all know and hear about, but it's become old hat. As a motivator, lemme just tell you that someone in the world dies from hunger every 3 seconds.
So head on over here and give it a spin! I stopped after donating 2kg of rice, and ended up at vocab level 38.
BTW, vocab level adjusts as you get things right or wrong, up to a max of 50, with a "it's rare to get to 48 and beyond" in the FAQ section, because it's meant to be a challenge from the average joe to university profs. I don't think I could crest level 40 (I MIGHT have been at 41 for the duration of one question before I got it wrong, haha), and eventually ended up at 38 after 2kg. This, I think, could be a motivator to us Creative Writing Clubbers back in the day, when words were still cool. ;)
So see how you score, and feed the hungry at the same time!
OWSCORPIO x-mas list
After much thought and deliberation, I've come up with a list of things that would be useful to me. I can't really afford to buy very expensive gifts again this year thanks to my egnormous daily expenses here, so please don't make any big purchases for me (cuz "stuff" is hardly important to me....just want to spend time with you guys). Again, please let me know this month whether you would like to have something from here....oh, and Rubin, I'll take Sex andthe City photos if u can find out where to go...'cept the clubs...i won't go there! Can't afford the fake ID!
Knee height socks (girls)...happy colors/designs, whatever suits your fancy
Bright, hot, warm coloured nail polish....nothing expensive, I just wanna keep up with the "cool" girls!!...candy pink is ideal
Costume jewellry from those girl's stores like Ardene's/Clarire's or any superstore: Loop earrings (pls keep in mind that i have an unusually small head!), any nice coloured dangling earrings
Candies: red/purple :gummies, lollipops, fruit roll ups...etc
Dried fruit: either the bulk stuff that comes with trail mix nuts or just prunes/cranberries/papaya....i'll eventually go to superstore which I find most reasonable
Garnier fructis curls and shine leave in treatment: to be rid of my horrid frizz so that I don't have to have my hair in a bun all the time
One 0.05 or 0.1 size sketching pen in black...to illustrate this wonderous city!
One medium gray tone marker for illustration
Or just a nice letter. I love to read stuff from friends about what they're doing and joke about the old days. there should be enough things here that are easy to find...one for each of you! If you want me to come up with more, then let me know!
Unpierced NOMORE!
At least, a post not about wish lists!
I have pierced my delicate delicate ears! It was a nerve wracking experience that I probably should've done when I was much younger so I could have an excuse to cry. But actually it wasn't painful at all, except for the actual puncturing. And I guess it helped that a 5 year old did it before I did, and then I wasn't allowed to cry according to my friend. I even needed to show them photo id so that I could prove I wasn't a minor. It looks very nice, and in the words of my friend, "makes me look more feminine." Because I was oh so unfeminine before...
But yay for punctured ears. Couldn't imagine doing the belly button piercing though because it involves needles and much more blood/pain. So must take good care of my ear holes for another 6 weeks, and then I can don lame Christmas earings. But today, while undressing, I almost wrenched my ear off because I wasn't being careful and my earing got caught in the cloth, and then before you know it, lots and lots of pain, and then I lost the back of the earing. But all is not lost. My friend lent me a replacement backing. So all is well in the land of earrings.
And that's it for now! Thanks everyone!
Belated Celebration of the Gothic Festival of the Lights and the Mysterious/Halloween
Gleetings all!
Here are some pictures of Twill, Nyx and I at our belated celebration of the Gothic Festival of the Lights and the Mysterious/Halloween.
All in all, it was glorious.We had dinner at Boston Pizza and concluded with a movie at my place... we watched Devil Wears Prada... Kris would be proud.
We also had booze, supplied thanks to Twill... Oh Blue Curaçao!
As promised here are the pictures: I was "Margaret, the slutty French maid", Twill was the personification of Static Cling (aka. Mrs. van de Graff) and Nyx was a cute sleepyhead.
Enjoy!
Important--Natrix's Wishlisty CHANGE
Yes, I know I said I wouldn't take stuff away...
But something came up! Or, I'm stupid. Take your pick!
I've been rereading His Dark Materials, with the notion that I could go for a bit and not worry, because it was The Amber Spyglass that I don't have, but read before.
Well, I finished The Golden Compass yesterday, and went on a search for The Subtle Knife--which I swore I had--and found The Amber Spyglass instead. o_O
Er. I knew I was missing one, and I know I only was able to read one of them because a friend lent it to me. I THOUGHT it was #3, but it would seem it's #2--The Subtle Knife, by Pullman.
So, this means...my list (now updated) should say, "THE SUBTLE KNIFE" by Phillip Pullman, rather than The Amber Spyglass.
Hope it doesn't mean disaster for someone who's already gotten it...sorry!
Nyx, you gave me quite a fright!
XD
Awesome job! My heart seriously skipped a beat with your "What I got people" e-mail, and you wrote something for me aside from the standard "?????"
I was at once pleased and bewildered that you looked up the "art exhibition" that student had with with the Virgin Mary to spite me. :P Pleasantly surprised, and frightened to death all in one stroke--masterfully done!
Oshi's list will come soon....need to think!
well, i've moved yet again...and this time to an actually descent apartment room....curretnly free of raoches but that's for now...
Can't wait to see everyone...let's start planning now, i'm sure we all have a million things to do before we head back...
#1. State what days you'll be in town
Pseudo Christmas Wishlist: Nyx
List is in no particular order, although I would really really really love some disco balls and origami paper. <3 :D
~ Cash or Safeway gift cards
I'm poor. I'm in Business. Money would significantly improve my debt-to-equity ratio and increase my return on assets. :D
~ Disco balls (a.k.a. mirror balls)!!!
The old-fashioned 80's kind, not the LED kind. It can be any size and any colour. The only restriction is no keychains. I've seen disco balls at Spencer's Gifts, San Francisco, and amazon.com, but if you happen to be strolling through the mall one day and come across, for example, disco ball Christmas tree ornaments, then think of me! I'm starting a disco ball collection, so the more the merrier!
~ Origami paper
The bigger the size, the better! I would prefer funky patterns, but solid colours are okay, too. I will be needing tons of this stuff, so it is okay if more than one person gets me this.
~ The Golden Compass movie posters
Just the ones with the giant polar bear (i.e., this one or this one). Oh, and as an aside, I already have all 3 of the books.
~ The Roaming Gnome statue (small)
~ Certain tokidoki merchandise
Tokidoki posters, stationery, stickers, pin buttons, wristwatches, or bags/purses. I'm in love with tokidoki!
~ Movie passes
~ Les Misérables by Victor Hugo (Penguin Classics edition)
I checked and this is available at Crowfoot Chapters (but only 1 in stock).
~ The Prose Edda: Tales from Norse Mythology by Snorri Sturluson (Penguin Classics edition)
~ Books about drawing (Natrix! Starwing! Desudesu!)
I have no idea which books are awesome and which are crap, and I trust your opinion over amazon.com book ratings. I'm interested in digital art/digital vectoring/people/anime/chibis, so something about anatomy/hair/eyes/expressions/clothes/cel shading would be great! I have Photoshop, Illustrator, and openCanvas.
~ New York souvenirs! (Oshi!)
Tote bags, cookies, mints, posters, postcards, etc. Oshi, if you see something cool and you think that I would like it, then go for it! :D
No knick knacks/curios, (unless you're Oshi), plushies/toys, or calendars please and thanks. :)
If you need more wishlist items make a comment or email me.
Achmed the Dead Terrorist
Have you guys seen this? It's hilarious! XD
Pseudo Christmas Wishlisty: Natrix
Whew. TGIF. TGIF! TGIF!! :( Actually, now that I think of it, it's not good to celebrate Fridays. Friday is certainly not a nice class to end the week... TGIW? Thank God It's (the) Weekend? Something like that. I can actually breathe...and sleep! Yay!
Um, so it's that time of year again, and once again, we are encouraged to write up our PC Wishlists. And once again, I find myself wondering at how little I seem to want! I have been told before that I'm a little difficult to shop for, not providing enough options and all. So, in light of that, I've wracked my brain, and I'll endeavor to update this list whenever I am reminded of something, or convinced that I wouldn't mind something after all!
And something else important: I promise NOT to remove anything. What's listed here will not be obtained by me, despite how much I'd like to maybe, but I will diligently hold out just in case. :) Again, I may update and add, but never take away.
To the list!
CDs
*Fauxliage (by Delerium + Leigh Nash)
*Desideratum (by Synaesthesia)
*Embody (by Synaesthesia)
*Outernational Sound (Thievery Corporation)
*The Subtle Knife (by Phillip Pullman)
*The Sandman: The Dream Hunters (by Neil Gaiman)
*Death: The High Cost of Living (by Neil Gaiman)
*Death: The Time of Your Life (by Neil Gaiman)
*The Sandman: Book of Dreams (edited by Neil Gaiman)
*The Little Endless Storybook (by Jill Thompson)
*Death: At Death's Door (by Jill Thompson)
*The Dead Boy Detectives (by Jill Thompson)
DVDs (widescreen if there's a choice)
*Rome Season 2
*Sunshine (2007, directed by Danny Boyle...yet to be released)
*Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
*Shrek the Third
Games
*Icewind Dale II (PC game)
Other Stuff
*A decent, USB plug and play mouse, wired or not, just NO BATTERIES and NO BLUETOOTH!
*An FSM T-shirt or hoody (any colour, but only variations with the logo: the "FSM" in the football shape, 6 wavy stalks, and eyeballs. The other designs are not so great. Could also include the "WWFSMD?" with logo. Medium or Large)
*Money. Honestly, the one thing I NEED (and want) is a ginormous, archival printer like the ones some print places downtown have, or the one at school. But, it's like $1000+, so it's not part of the list, and any funds I get would go towards that. :) Based on scholarships and working in the summer, I could get it right away, but it'll put a sizable dent in finances... It would be used to output large-format projects I have, as well as prints, so I don't have to pay outrageous money to do so outside of ACAD, which has the advantage of great pricing, but closing way too early to be of use to me. :(
There, I think rather detailed this time around. :)
Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween everyone!
Here's a game I found that's very cute, easy, but in the spirit of things. Definitely worth looking at to see the cute little vampire :3
http://games.zeeks.com/transylmania-9008/?page=play#Scene_1
And the epic sequel http://games.zeeks.com/transylmania-2-9037/?page=play
Hope everyone had a great day!
Happy Gothic Festival of the Lights and the Mysterious to You All!
Gleetings dukes and duchesses, gods and goddesses!
Today, in Western tradition, is Halloween. So... HAPPY HALLOWEEN! May you acquire lots and lots of candy, no matter what method you prefer to use: whether mooching off your younger siblings, going out trick-or-treating even though you're 20 (or nearing 20... *shakes fist*) or going off and buying candy and eating it while curling up to your favourite horror movie.
BUT! Today is also the Gothic Festival of the Lights and the Mysterious, a traditional Mutualese holiday that is strongly associated with Twill, goddess of magic, dreams and all knowledge! Mutualese myth dictates that on this day, Twill invites all the other gods and goddesses to her Mythical Citadel to celebrate this special night. Mutualese traditions on this day include dressing up in various costumes, most notably as personifications of colours, teenage-slasher-flick-murder-victims or vampires, as well as eating copious amounts of food and placing a giant stuffed ape in the corner in tribute to Kris, god of time, space and healing.
So, Happy Gothic Festival of the Lights and the Mysterious to you all!
Pseudo Christmas Wishlists
So, like Twill said, it would be good to start thinking about or to start sending out wishlists.
I am already picking out gifts. I have an extra idea that might pan out and be a good surprise, but I'll need some info. from you guys:
- Your favourite TV show(s)
- Your favourite actor(s)/actress(es)
Your list doesn't need to be too detailed (like, 3 or 4 names is fine). Comment or send me an email ASAP.
*fingers crossed*
Pseudo Christmas
Alright, so... I'd love to host Pseudo Christmas this year, and somehow work my birthday into it because I didn't have a birthday last year =\
I'm giving you lots of notice so you can make arrangements and heckle over dates. Yes, I do live out of town still. It will be awesome, because how many of you have actually been to a farm with little animals running around? It shouldn't be too hard to get there, it's only about half an hour out of town, and carpooling is possible.
Dates? Activity suggestions? Potluck or what?
The Revival of Mutualism!!!!
Hey everyone!
It's good to see that the blog is being used once again! Oh glorious WIBOM! Praise! Praise!
But yes! On a semi-related note, I was looking for some old notes the other day and I found the Lord of the Rings-inspired story that I was attempting to write in High School! And I re-read it... Oh my... the number of obscure high school/The Group references in there... it was glorious! GLORIOUS!!!!
But yes, I have re-discovered my once passionate love for Mutalism and our "faith". AND, since I'm taking History of Drama and we just finished Ancient Greek Theatre, which is filled to the brim with oh-so cool Greek mythology AND because Twill explained and entertained me with her versions of tales from Greek mythology, I've created a few accessory mythical beings for Mutualism. Starting with:
Menrye, Zowen and Lorna, the Three Fairies of Art, Music and Literature: My version of the Greek Muses. They are servants to Starwing (godess of movement, awareness and creative expression and Scorpio (godess of art, utensils and prepardness).
Hideous, the Demonic Hound of Vengence: My version of the Eumendies/Furies from Greek mythology. My inspiration for Hideous was kinda out of no where: I was watching Family Guy, in the episode "Stewie Kills Lois", and it was right after the part where Stewie suceeds in killing Lois and I was like: "BEWARE THE EUMENIDIES, STEWIE! BEWARE THE EUMENDIES!!!" (I had just finished reading "The Libation Bearers" and "The Eumendies" by Aeschylus where Orestes kills Clytaemestra). But no Eumendies came... so I was like "I'm going to create my own verion of the Eumendies!" And that's how Hideous was born...
Hideous, according to Mutalese myth, appears when a dire breach of trust has occured (ie. matricide, fratricide, infanticide) and Hideous drags the body of the victim to the Altar of the gods and goddesses (us! Yay!) as evidence of the crime. Hideous then hunts down the perpetrator(s) so that they can be brought to divine justice.
The best part of this is the fact that Hideous is controlled by none other than Natrix (god of voodoo, charisma and righteousness), Obsidian (goddess of Mars, the undead and all destruction) and Melody (goddess of pain, anger and yelling/violence). I kinda imagined a Mutualese motif/mosiac with holy-Natrix holding on to a leash with a giant and vicious black dog on the other end, with holy-Obsidian stroking Hideous and holy-Melody feeding him with a bone.
Next up, the Ten Fairies of Goodness, or as Twill renamed them, with a more funky name, the Nine Fairies of Ity and Justice. The Ten Fairies are: Dexterity, Masculintiy, Femininity, Divinity, Beauty, Chivarly, Industry, Dignity, Fertility and Justice.
The Ten Fairies are essentially our errand fairies, and I created them because there were some areas that weren't covered by our god/goddess titles.
So ya! On that vein, I want to see if any of you out there want your own divine beings as your own servant deities. I've already asked Twill and she's thinking about it, and I'm in the process of thinking about mine. For me, I'm thinking about the Manizons (Thanks, Twill). The Manizons are the Guardians of Creation, and they're an army of tall, hot and sexy men... 'nuff said, lol. Ya.. I'll think about their actual role later....
So ya! I'm having a lot of fun revisting and enriching Mutalism! Next I maybe writing some actual myths invovling our holy personas and these mythical beings! Yay! So if any one you want your own sevant beings, feel free to get in touch with me!
~! Rubin
Oh btw, I've decided to do a funky name reversal thing. In my mind, our duke/duchess and god/goddess entities are two separate things. So for instance, there's Duke Windchester of Mount Concordia and Natrix, god of voodoo, charisma and righteousness. Funky, no? Imagine how funky/weird it will be:
"Oh great Twill! Goddess of Magic, Dreams and all Knowledge protect us!" said Duchess Clearwater of Riverside.
We back?
Are we using the blog again? I was shocked to see recent posts
Well it's been so long since I've heard anyhting from everyone in new york: Twill, Rubin and(Polar bear girl) sorry i forget the name offhand....are u excited that you're finally in third year...not taking anoying prereq courses?!....nervous about being done your udergrad or do u have the next 5 years already planned out?
Can't WAIT for x-mas! I can't wait to finally eat more than a boiled egg for dinner!
Classes here rock. I'm looking for another place to move into cuz i essentially got asked to get out of my current apartment....the joys of living on your own under someone else's house!
Plus it'll be good to finally be free of the roaches and mice....big rats the size of cats...or the same volume as one of those fluffy gerbels.
ooh....are any of u into graphic novels? I'm looking for some inspiration so i can illustrate my own based on a thriller i'm reading right now. So what are your favs? The library is full of animae and manga ro whatev, so that would work too.
Lova y'all
Double Dating
So my friend has herself a boy, and she is in the honeymoon stage with the squealing and the squealing and the squealing and the obsessing and the not much else. And she wants me to share in the joy by going with her on a double date. That of course would involve another boy. But she says I should just somehow get one, "like that," (imagne snapping). I just met her boy last night when he went to pick her up from my place because I made her a homemade meal and all that. From 1 minute of meeting him and fake conversation, I gave him my wholehearted approval. Let's just say he's cute as a button, and makes me want to squeeze his cheeks. Tis glorious. But back to double-dating. It is scary. I can imagine just us girls squealing with the guys rolling their eyes. I do not want awkwardness. There are candidates. But none seem terribly worthy. And sadly there are no good movies to go see, so I guess we shall be stuck eating and making awkward conversation.
中秋節快樂!!!
It's the Mid-Autumn Festival tonight! According to Chinese tradition, the moon is the brightest, biggest and the most beautiful tonight, the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month.
So, a little about the festival. To my Western friends, I compare the Mid-Autumn festival to a harvest festival of sorts, but there's a complex series of stories behind the festival:
In western tradition, "the man on the moon" is often invoked. In Chinese culture, "the woman on the moon" is invoked instead.
Listen my children (lol) as I tell you the story of 嫦娥 (Shourn Ngo), the Maiden of the Moon:
Many, many years ago, the earth was surrounded ten suns that burned the Earth and caused the people much hardship. One day, the gods, moved by the suffering of the people, called upon the greatest archer in the land, Hou Ngei (后羿), to shoot down nine of the ten suns with magical arrows the gods themselves forged.
Hou Ngei proceeded to climb the tallest tree in the land, and with his bow and the magical arrows, shot down nine of the ten suns, thus eliviating the suffering of humanity. The people of the land, grateful to Hou Ngei, crowned him emperor of the land, and he proceeded to marry the most beautiful woman of the land, Shourn Ngo.
However, power corrupted Hou Ngei, and he became a great and cruel tyrant. Obsessed with maintaining his power and control over humankind, he proceeded to search for the Elixir of Life. On one devious quest, he managed to steal the Elixir of Life from the Mother Goddess of the West (西王母), the goddess of immortality. When Hou Ngei told his wife of the success of the devious plan, Shourn Ngo, partially out of her own greed to achieve immortatlity, and partially to save humanity from the cruel and oppresive rule of her husband, took and drank the Elixir of Life from her husband while he was sleeping.
However, a perculiar thing happened when she finished drinking the Elixir; she started to float. Higher and higher she went, and her cries for help wakened Hou Ngei in a rage. Shourn Ngo floated so high that she landed on the moon, and while Hou Ngei was ready to shoot down the moon with his last magical arrow, his love for his beautiful wife prevented him doing so.
And while Hou Ngei eventually died a natural death, legend has it that Shourn Ngo still lives on the moon to this day, thanks to the Elixir that she drank, both out of greed and compassion.
I have another story too! (Lol, one more, I promise!). I think most of you have heard that the Italians see the face of a beautiful woman when they look at the moon, but the Chinese see a rabbit stomping on a block of herbs!
The story behind this rabbit stomping herbs (named "The Jade Rabbit" 玉兔) is one that also stems deep into Chinese folklore and culture.
Many, many years ago, three gods disguised themselves as beggars to test the compassion of Earth's beings. On the road, they built set up camp and encountered three animals: a monkey, a fox and a rabbit, and asked all three for some food. The monkey, being able to climb the tallest of fruit trees, gathered fruit and nuts from the surrounding forest and offered them to the three "beggars". The fox, being devious and sneaky, ran to a hut and stole some milk and dried fish. The rabbit, only able to fetch grass, also knew that some hardy meat would fill the stomachs of the "beggars". Thus, out of compassion for the "beggars", the rabbit decided to offer himself as food and jumped into the camp fire that "beggars" had lit.
However, when the rabbit jumped into the fire, he was not burned nor hurt; for the "beggars" threw off their disguises and revealed themselves to be gods. The gods, touched by the virtue and compassion of the rabbit, praised rabbits for being the most timid, thoughtful and compassionate of all animals and proceeded to reward the rabbit who tried to sacrifice himself by granting him immortality on the moon, so that everyone may see him and be reminded of the rabbit's selflessness and compassion whenever they see the moon.
When the rabbit was granted immortality on the moon, he stumbled upon Shourn Ngo, and the two keep each other company to this day...
And so, these are the two stories of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The Chinese eat mooncakes on this night because the bright yellow yolk inside symbolizes the beauty of the moon on this night and reminds people of these two stories. (There's a story of mooncakes being used to send messages around to overthrow the Mongols, but I've never heard of this story and neither have my parents).
By the way, the versions of the two stories that I told are but two of many, many versions, so if you know of, or hear of, different versions, that's why.
Anywho, I'm off for some mooncake and tea! Hope you'll have some too, tonight! If not, just look outside and observe how beautiful the moon is tonight!
RUN OB RUN
You know the initials of OB remind me of a feminine hygiene product. so I don't think I like it. But tomorrow I'm running my little heart out of my shady neighborhood to the waterfront. 5 days a week at 7 in the bloody morning. just cause I have to be fit. and cause the kickboxing place is so far away. Maybe i'll meet fellow runners as well. and then i will fall upon my waffles like a ravenous sponge.
K-town was so freakin' hot when I came back I was melting. Wish I was a boy so I could go topless. but it looks weird. too much naked flesh. and I am not impressed with what i see. at least in the house. no, i'm not talkin' about myself. i'm talkin' about the boys in the house. no six packs there. but no beer bellies either. just bean-poles. miles and miles of bean-poles.
this year will be different. that's what i say every year. but i'm predicting the future here. i want change. blah blah blah. and university will only last so long before i'm thrust out of it. into scary scary real world. save me italian count save me.
i really do miss the mountains though. i should have some mountain wallpaper or something.
i didn't really check this blog over the summer because i was really really lazy, but i am trapped in my little room over here, so I hereby resurrect it. With Jesus Juice.
Le Fringe Parte Deux!
Okay.
The Fringe schedule is up, sort of. You need to check the box-office and click to view descriptions of the shows, as the program doesn't appear to actually be online (which is silly, if you ask me). Take a look, find some shows you want to see, and let's get this thing figured out. Here's the link http://tickets.fringetheatre.ca/Default.aspx?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1
As mentioned in a comment on the last post, Rubin might not be in Edmonton if we decide to go up later, so there's the issue of finding and booking a hotel if that's the case. I've emailed Rubin about this, asking if he'd want to come back up with us or would stay later, but I haven't heard back from him. I'll let you know if I hear anything. If we have to book a place to stay, I'd reccomend either staying in residence at the University, in their conference services rooms, or go to Campus Towers down the street, as I believe they are reasonably priced. If anyone has other suggestions, feel free to share.
Twill's Show Choices:
- Eat My Brain
- Mark Twain's 'Is Shakespeare Dead?'
- Sacrilicious
- Superhero LIVE!
- Thomas Baxter's ThoughtControl
- Waiting for Grimm
- WATER
I suppose Eat My Brain, Sacrilicious and Superhero LIVE would be my top three choices. I think ticket prices are $10ish per show, but it varies.
And while it sucked last year, there is the option of foregoing transit and possible hotel costs in order to just go to the theatre events in Calgary. They have several of the same shows as Edmonton, as well as some others (Sacrilicious being one example of a shared show, Clown's Macbeth and Jihad Me At Hello as different but still potentially good). http://calgaryfringe.carbonpop.com/tickets/categories/7-theatre is where you can find out some information on these things.
Let's get talking, peoples! The longer we wait, the more difficult it will be to book time off, buses and places to stay!
Le Fringe
Hey howdy hey everybody!
So, I was just thinking about how it's getting closer and closer to the end of the month, and some of us had discussed going up to Edmonton for the Fringe Festival (since Calgary's sucked last year, although "Do You Bite Your Thumb At Me, Sir?" was pretty awesome, in my opinion). I just wanted to give a general poke about it, get talking, make some plans if everyone's still up for it. I need to give notice at work, and I'm sure others do as well, so better early than late, eh?
Tickets and the program for the entire event apparently go up around August 2, so I guess discussion about what to see/do will have to wait until then. But, from the 16th-26th, are there any days that are looking particularly viable? I'm thinking we go up for 3ish days to hang out and get a full experience, but I'm definitely flexible.
Thoughts?
Pandemic Cookies, anyone???
When I took the trip back to Guangzhou (Canton) and Beijing three years ago, my brother and I found much entertainment at the horrible, horrible English on Chinese signs... everything from packaging, to notices, to official signage in airports and hotels....
I recently found this youtube video that captures a lot of the hilarious signs that I saw in China, and I hope you all will enjoy it as much as I did...
Some awesome snippets include:
-"Cashier's Table" in Chinese being translated as "Accept the set of silver" in English
-Olino cookies made by the Pandemic Cookie company, which looks like the Chinese counterfeit version of Oreos...
-Soup Oprea
-Bang Pai bandages (which looks the Chinese counterfeit version of Bandaid brand bandages)
-And my personal favourite: the Office of Mayhem Evaluation
Oh Chinese Mandarin English.... I can imagine the 2008 Beijing Olympic blooper reels already and the sea of confused foriegners.....
Hope you enjoy!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TWILL!!!
My dearest Twill:
HAPPY FRICKEN' BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!
Bid Farewell to your teen years and come join us on the Dark Side! *DUN DUN DUNNNNNNN!!!!*
May your years be many and rich with good memories and times! I wish you the very, very best here from Shireton and my special envoy will be arriving soon in Clearwater to deliver you a vast train of gold, gems and silver (It's all about the bling bling here in Higherton Shire).
Harry Potter
It's kind of depressing how 95% of people start out at the bottom doing typical entry-level jobs, slowly working their way up over the years to a higher salary. And then there are those who achieve instant stardom and end up making millions in one year, just for posing in a fashion show or doing one lousy movie. It's actually very depressing.
I was reading some Harry Potter stuff this morning, and I can't believe Daniel Radcliffe's going to get $40 million by the time he's 18. Oh, Hollywood. *sigh*
But anyway, I'm starting to feel bad for Rupert Grint. He gets very little time in press conferences. Daniel's all decked out in formal wear now but Rupert's still in jeans and a semi-dirty shirt. And in the photoshoots, Emma always seems to be hanging off of Daniel (I guess it's because of the rumours that they're dating?):
Why does one guy always have to be labeled the handsome hero while the other one is just his dorky sidekick? :(
I'll probably still end up seeing the movie, if only for Voldie, 'cause he looks DAMN GOOD in that Armani suit. XD
Are you smarter than a fifth grader? (Part II)
So ya.... I was channel flipping today and I came across "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?".
This last contestant for the night was a pre-med student at Kent State University... kinda hyper, mid-late-twenties, but very dumb.
He was asked three questions, and the way he answered two of them blew me away....
First question: From Grade 1 Health Education:
"True or False? The Esophagus is the passage that connects that your mouth to your nose?"
His answer: "Well I know the pharynx is the throat part... *drones on and on and on without anwersing the question, mean while, the kid got it in five seconds*.... I'm going to say....... FALSE"
(No wonder he WAS a pre-med student....)
Second question: From Grade 1 Earth Science:
"A man-made basin that stores water is called: a.) Channel b.) Reservoir c.)Isthmus"
His answer: More talking and "reasoning", while the kid gets the answer in five second flat.... and in the end, he decided to take a peek.... that's when I rolled my eyes and changed the chanel....
So ya.... this is a good show to make one feel good... Let me just say that I'm content in the fact that while there are a lot of people out there who are smarter than me, there are a lot of people out there who are dumber as well!
Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?
$2,000 question (1st grade animal science):
True or false? In the wild, polar bears typically feed on penguins.
Constestant: "I'm going to have to [cheat and] peek at Laura's answer."
$25,000 question (2nd grade US geography):
What country has the longest shared border with the United States?
Contestant: "I'm going to say Mexico."
Not to mention all the really easy math questions that nobody seems to get right...
I'm so freaking jealous of Americans. Yes, let's all reward the stupid by giving them insane amounts of money.
Everyone Has A Disco Ball Except For Me
...It's true. I don't know when it started, but all of a sudden I've been noticing disco balls everywhere. And I mean everywhere. Today, I came upon an episode of "Throwdown with Bobby Flay," (*groan* I hate Bobby Flay), and he randomly challenged this guy who makes doughnuts at an event called Doughnut Disco. I was like, "Seriously?!" The concept was that you eat doughnuts while/between/after discoing. o_O"
So now I'm sad because I do not have a disco ball to call my own. :(
We don't have much time!
We have to decide on a date for Oshi's thing. Like, now. Now, now, NOW!
It's about mid-May already!
Reply and leave a date. I say Saturday the 26th.
Hallo Knut
I saw Stephen Colbert mention this on his show today (on yesterday's show, he spoke French and got Bobby to dress up as a mime :D):
SO DAMN CUTE. There are tons more videos of him. X3
Knut's a polar bear orphan, (AWWW), living in Germany. Apparently, he's the "Justin Timberlake of polar bears." XD MUST GO TO GERMANY. D: *kidnaps Natrix to act as translator*
OSHI'S GOING AWAY. PARTAY
Since our lovely Oshi is leaving us very very soon, at least I think she is, it's only fitting that we send her off with a big shebang. Sometime this month, maybe around the end part of it seems to be a good time. Alas, too bad the Duke won't be able to come.
Don't have any grand ideas at the moment, but just wanted to say that we should maybe start planning stuff. I imagine, knowing the kind of person Oshi is, there will be lots of drinking...
I'm a RAT?????????
Interesting... I was kinda scared when the thing came across the screen, I was afraid that I would get the cockroach daemon or something, but then I was like... "huh... a rat???????" (I know it's "mouse" but I'm content on it being a rat)
I love how the world that Golden Compass is set in is much like our own: "Brytan, Norroway"... haha... Prance, Conoda, Sermany and the rest. Indeed.
Golden Compass
Looks like everyone has jumped on the wagon. And I think I'm finally giving in and reading the book this summer. So many book to movie adaptations coming out.
I'm too incompent to complete the test properly. Well too incompetent to post the test online. I finished it, but the last step doesn't work for me. It's apparently a male chimpanzee...
Hmm
I'm proud and fickle? :( How can I be both proud and modest?...
Shazomg
Year 2 at uni. has been shitty, or "merdeux" as the French would say. This makes me feel better:
I'm changing its name to HUFFLEPUFF.
Edit: It was originally a cool raven/crow; someone changed it to a lynx. :P
Another something to pass the time
Not that I know anything much about the books/movie, aside from the synopsis that Nyx gave me (especially that there is a polar bear =D). But still. Why not?
Guess Who's Back In Town?
Not the boys, that's for sure.
So. I'm all done university for another year and back in Calgary! And I'm taking a few days to take a breather and get used to no more classes before worrying about the dreaded summer job :| If anyone in town has some free time here or there, I'm totally free to say, "Hey!" and catch up :) Natrix, anytime you're available for a multi-houred conversation, we're good to go.
I'm currently staying at my mom's and, on that note, check your email! New phone number is available to reach me, instead of the crazy system of last summer.
And finally - to anyone interested, My Chemical Romance are in Calgary on Friday, May 18 at the Saddledome, starting at 7:30. I've already purchased a ticket, but should anyone be interested in going I say, the more the merrier! I know it's last minute and chances may be slim to sit together, but I thought I'd throw it out there.
It's great to be home! :D
HAPPY LAST DAY OF CLASSES!!!
TO ALL U OF A STUDENTS!!!
HAPPY LAST DAY OF CLASSES!!! To all of you who still have classes.... I pity you.... I pity you with all my heart.
I finished one final last night, Pre-Confederation Canadian History and went out to celebrate with my history buddies. One note: Joey Tomato's = very good looking waiters/waitresses. And I have discovered my favourite high class cocktail: Singapore Sling. It's like a fancy, eloquent yet wild and tropical concoction! IT'S SOOOOO GOOD! And to all chocolate lovers... You have to try Joey's awesome Chocolate dessert.... I forgot what it was called... but it was like... chocolate volcano or something.... AGH!!! IT'S SOOO BLOODY AMAZING!!!
Edmonton is beautiful today! I didn't need a coat at all this morning and I'm geared up for some die-hard dancing, partying, movie-going and drinking tonight! It shall be awesome indeed!
Btw... Spring lust is in the air.... and the hot guys probably come out when the weather's nice too... I'm at a computer lab right now and I'm surrounded by AMAZING, BREATH TAKING "Second Cups" (aka. HOT GUYS!!!) WHOOOOO! (I shall have my Second Cups, and enjoy them too *naught wink/smile*)
Have a nice day, everyone!
~Rubin
PS
Btw.... Obsidian posted this link on Facebook... you should all have a look at it... Even a non-Star Wars fan like me can appreciate this uber-awesome parody.
Facebook Revolution
You all bent to the will of facebook, or at least most of you guys did. It is addictive, especially for stalking people. Oh, the stalking, and the rifling through personal pictures. It is wondrous. And some ppl, who I shall not name, don't read their bloody e-mail, but have time to go on facebook, so that's an added plus.
Cheers to those who tried to hold out like me, but couldn't. And Kudos who still resist. But in the immortal words of the Borg, "Resistance if Futile".
Intermediate Plans
Well, since we can't possibly expect K to be kind enough to wake up before 12pm and call Starwing back, the temporary plan is to meet at Emily's house...a time hasn't been set, but I'm guessing about 4-5pm. If everyone could bring something to eat aswell as something to do (ex, I was going to bring a bag of baking fries and gravy along with cranium in case we needed something to do) it would be much appreciated...we'll likely order out for food
k, ttyl
Get Togather Good Friday
Get Together Good friday
Well, I lightly dosed off watching "Ray", but apparently there weren't any calls anyways. Could Starwing give me a call asap or even the others?...I'm not really a priority since it doesn't really matter what the plan is in these three days of easy goingness..
The time is now 1:00am; We'll see what the plan is in the mornig...I'll call starwing at 7:30-8am
Scor[io signing out; "Good night Chicago"
p.s. to the other out of towners...pray that next time we meet I'll be booking a flight to the Big Apple. If it's meant to be, this small town girl will be on the road in no time.
Thanks so much Nyx and Twill!!!
I just got your package today. Just your typical day, tired, slept late before class started, projects left and right to do...although I did have an epiphany in class today during our model study. :O But all in all, an average day, until I got home to such a surprise!
You two really shouldn't have! There was very little I wanted at all, and I still insist that nothing would have been okay. :)
It's funny I got an issue of CMYK mag, though. Ugh. Spent my entire afternoon, sans lunch, working things out at Kinko's, printing CMYK separations for Thursday, wrangling through the horrors of InDesign CS2, etc. Too fitting!
I'm thrilled with The Sandman graphic novel, too, but I'll have to put it aside for a while longer. Time issues, and I have to wait until I grab the previous two volumes. Don't worry about it--the thoughtfulness was wonderful, thank you both again!
Job Prospects
Yeah, I know it's early, and there's still finals, but I'm thinking about summer already. Must find work! If not, then I can always lounge about, and dream about Europe, and learn how to drive finally. Have nightmares of running people over. Just kidding. I actually had a dream once where I was forced to take the wheel from some kinda disaster, and I drove quite finely...
Still, I want to learn how to drive properly, but I'm afraid of the road. I should probably go conquer it. People are mean, and I don't want to deal with ppl with road rage. I'll probably end up with one of those Chinese Driving Schools and they'll swear at me in Cantonese. Wah...
I just mainly want to get a new driving licence picture thingy, because my old one makes me look like I'm still in junior high.
Bonne Fête!
Aujourd'hui, c'est l'anniversaire de Duke Rubin!
So how does it feel to be 20? ;)
Here's to interesting history courses, good times with friends, late night coffee runs, and, of course, "second cups." :D
Cheers!
Oops...
First: Happy Birthday once more, Nyx. This'll make, what, 4 times if you count the e-card? Today was fun :)
Second: Due to my inability to read my calendar properly, I need to amend my timeframe on the 'school experiences blurb' thing. I'd need them by next weekend at the latest, as the preliminary version is due the following Monday. My apologies for misreading my stickie notes. I've really got to get closer when looking so as not to have this happen.
This is not to stress anyone out; I understand busy schedules and the like completely. Still, the more blurbs I find in my inbox, the better off I'll be for this project. Thanks once again! :D
REBOOT!!!
Hurrah! I am back with a post!!!
My love for Youtube has just been reconfirmed.... I have discovered that all the episodes of "Reboot" can now be found on there.... Oh the nostalgia!!!
For those of you who don't know (But I would hope most of you would if you watched YTV when you were young), "Reboot" was the first (or one of the first, anyway) television programs to completley use CGI and computer graphics. It's bascially about the life and times of computerized people living within a computerized world that is located inside your computer. The "Reboot" series is revolutionary for incorporating numerous pop culture references and parodies, using computer lingo as if they were common, colliqual terms and for (at least I feel) having a fantastic, epic and dark storyline spanning three television seasons and 2 made-for-television movies.
I recently found my most favourite episode online. It features my most favourite villan/villaness as the main antagonist: HEXADECIMAL!!!! I used to think of her as just the random crazy villan when I was younger, but now that I'm older, I really appreciate how dynamic and vivid she is; she isn't merely an evil-doer, but she so many extra elements to her that make her my most favourite character on the show and one of my most favourite villans ever!!! (Plus I love her random mood swings; something I can totally relate to) AND THE MASKS!!! THE MASKS!!! I love how she effortlessly changes from one to next by swipping her arms/hands in front of her face.
But ya! anyway! the episode... it's called "Painted Windows" and Nyx, you might enjoy the numerous computer references that are in the show and Natrix, you might appreciate all the pretty colours and the parodies of famous paintings and works of art. And everyone, brace yourself for a very bad pun close to the beginning of the episode.... you'll know when you hear it.
But none of you can watch the full episode, here are my favourite moments:
Clip 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSPtgXqCmEc&mode=related&search=
0:45-0:48 (Bad pun alert!)
1:50 (Famous painting allusion #1)
2:04 (Famous painting allusion #2)
2:50-2:54 (THE FACES!!! THE CHANGING OF THE FACES!!!)
2:59-3:20 (Beautiful example of her random mood swings and her amazing, bone-chilling cackle)
3:14 (Famous painting allusion #3)
Clip 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kv-Mv1Luggk
0:55 (Famous painting allusion #4)
1:48-2:50 (Brilliant art commentary and famous painting allusions!!!)
Clip 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UAGhsxjq3Q
See for youself
So ya! Hope you enjoy!
~Rubin
PS.
Today is monumental day in the evolution of the Shirelese language; I created the four version of the English "you":
"you" - Multi-purpose and informal
"ye" - Formal use and formal plural
"yea" - Plural
"yo" - informal; used for those who are close to you and of the same age/status
