Feed the poor!

I'm sure we've all heard of this somehow somewhere, the vocabulary game freerice.com

An international effort, it's a game that donates 10 grams of rice for each question you get correct. It made news when it amassed quite a bit of rice to be distributed.

Recently, I just finished a project dealing with poverty, and came to appreciate the seriousness of the issue. You know, something we all know and hear about, but it's become old hat. As a motivator, lemme just tell you that someone in the world dies from hunger every 3 seconds.

So head on over here and give it a spin! I stopped after donating 2kg of rice, and ended up at vocab level 38.

BTW, vocab level adjusts as you get things right or wrong, up to a max of 50, with a "it's rare to get to 48 and beyond" in the FAQ section, because it's meant to be a challenge from the average joe to university profs. I don't think I could crest level 40 (I MIGHT have been at 41 for the duration of one question before I got it wrong, haha), and eventually ended up at 38 after 2kg. This, I think, could be a motivator to us Creative Writing Clubbers back in the day, when words were still cool. ;)

So see how you score, and feed the hungry at the same time!

I tried it and felt both smart/stupid at certain points. It helps if you knew the base root/origin of words, because there are so many french originated words and all that. I got around what you got Natrix, and stopped after 2 kg.

Fwaha! 1.2 kilos and an average word score of 31. I had these sinusoidal patterns where I would go on a streak and then fumble, then go on a streak again... nifty idea though! It's much like that site with the "press and button" and then BOOM, you've donated money to free mammograms or food or a certain amount of rainforest or something...

The highest I made it to was 43, though I sat at 41-42 more often. I think I managed to get 2/3 questions at 43, but then failed the last one and lost the level. Yay for French and Greek and a teeny bit of Latin knowledge :D!

I donated about 2kg as well, because rice is nice :)

Yes, definitely some knowledge of etymology (sp?) helped, because I certainly didn't know some of those harder words, but a quick look at roots and such yielded the right answer 9 out of 10 times.

We have such a smart circle of friends! :)
