My fondest farewells....

To everyone:

I leave for Edmonton tommorrow! To my pals down here, I wish you all a good rest-of-your-break and continued sucess in all your endeavours!

I'll try to keep in touch on MSN (but as you all know, I never do like talking on MSN) and I'll call you all when I back down for breaks.

Fondest and most sincere farewells,
~Rubin

He Doesn't Look A Thing Like Jesus

1. The gathering was great. ^^
2. I like Fall Out Boy now. :/ Or at least, just "Dance, Dance"
3. THE KILLERRRRSSSS!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MmjxTzURXg

I'm sorry, but I still don't like the music vid very much. But the girl should seriously buy an axe and go on a rampage. Nobody goes on rampages anymore. :( The guy's too greasy.

"He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagined when you were young"

So true.

I can't stop listening to it! XDD

New album out October 3rd, which means it will have leaked by September. :P

EDITOO: Oh yeah, what's up with "Sexyback"? It's like, 1000% synthesizers? The whole FutureSex/LoveSound" album doesn't get much better than that (it leaked, okay? XPP).

And this has got to be one of the signs of the apocalypse:

Gathering Update

So, as far as I know, this is the status of our group members:

Twill - free tomorrow
Natrix - free tomorrow
Nyx - free tomorrow
Starwing - free tomorrow
owscorpio - out of town until mid-week (maybe we can do something small with her then)
Kris - unavailable/unreachable
Rubin - free for lunch tomorrow
Melody - not available
Butterfly - hasn't been reached
Erin - should be available

I'll update this list if anything changes.

So, for those who can make a lunch date tomorrow afternoon (and possibly going on to do something else) the question, then, is when and where? Crowfoot, I think, might be the most accessible for everyone. Off the top of my head there's Joey Tomatoes, Montannas, and Boston Pizza. Personally, I could go for any of these but my vote would probably be BP.

Timewise, well, I guess your average lunch time around noonish? I'm flexible. Rubin and anyone else who might have time constraints, does this work?

EDIT: Okay, it's been set up. We're meeting at the Crowfoot Boston Pizza tomorrow (Sunday) at around noon. We may go on to do something afterward but nothing concrete is planned. To Kris and anyone who hasn't been reached, we hope to see you there! If not, then hopefully something else during the week will work out.

Thanks for doing some phoning around, Starwing.

So, About That Gathering...

It's been a while since Rubin mentioned a possible last romp with everyone together, and I thought I'd bring it up again since we're running out of time, for the U of A folks, anyway. I'm not sure when Obsidian Butterfly has to go back, but probably pretty soon as well.

So, looking at what everyone's said, what would be a good day? This Sunday for dinner? Sometime during the week? I know there are probably some people who still have to work, and U of C's classes are starting up Monday (I think) so it's going to be tough getting everyone together but if we want it to happen, we should get on it. Natrix is back Saturday from B.C. and Kris, hopefully, is back or will be back from his trip soon (does anyone know?).

So if I say Sunday evening for dinner, maybe around 5 or 6 o'clock somewhere relatively nice - Cheesecake Cafe, Montannas, etc - what's everyone's reactions? Let's get some discussion going.

I'm in BC

...if you didn't know. :P

I'm here until the 26th.

BTW, Jimbo's no longer performing at the Fringe. XD My lengthy complaint was one of many, as told to me by the director dude of the Festival. He said he was going to get his side of the story, and later dropped me a short note saying the loser's gone for good. :)

EDIT: Post something, owscorpio, to welcome yourself here! :)

My apologies and my two cents

To Nyx and Natrix:

I'm so sorry to hear that you two had such a disappointing time! I knew from talking to you, Natrix, that you were looking forward to this festival and it does seriously blow that it was such a flop. I mean come on.... half an hour to go from elated to apathetic? Not a good sign for any festival!

To Nyx: I agree with you on your thoughts about the arts in Calgary. I mean, as much as I don't like Edmonton, I must admit that Edmonton has a much more lively and coherent arts scene. Maybe the main reason for this is because Edmonton ONLY has Whyte Ave and nowhere else for the Bohemians, the students and the artists to congregate... I mean, the only other place is West Edmonton Mall (which gets very boring after going there twice...) and downtown (which is DEAD on the weekends).

As much as I dislike the hobos (pardon the term, Nyx) and the "questionable" people (ie. Drunks on a Friday/Saturday night) that hang around Whyte, I like Whyte Ave for it's Bohemian spirit... the fact that this street leads smack dab straight to the university and runs through the area where a lot of young people live brings a certain energy to the place.... there's at least three different theatres that show all sorts of funky independent films, play houses and theatres (my favourite is the Improv Club at Varscona) and chic cafés to gather around with friends (like Starbucks! or Death by Chocolate! or Steeps!).

Alas, for what it's worth, Nyx, if you're around Edmonton in August next summer, we'll go to the EDMONTON Fringe Festival... until then, maybe you, Twill and I can gather one Friday night to go to Varscona and enjoy a night of improv!!! And Natrix, if you get to come to Edmonton sometime next year, give me a call and I'll show you around Whyte... I think that you'll like it for it's spirit!

Cheers!

This Is My Sad Face: :(

What the hell happened to you, City Of Calgary In General? First, you revamp your transit site into a disgusting piece of trash, then you allow the worst festival in the entire universe to happen--FOR TEN FREAKING DAYS.

I am so disillusioned. Where were the circus performers in big top tents? Where were the jugglers, the musicians, and other such street performers? WHERE THE HELL WAS THE MIME?

Most importantly, where was the vibe? That artsy vibe that I've only read about in books but never actually experienced. The feeling that Calgary still has some semblance of an art community, where artists are willing to share their knowledge and work with other people, and promote...well, art, in all its glorious forms. No, the only thing we have that's even close to that is the Calgary Stampede, and that makes something inside me die a little.

So what exactly was wrong with the Fringe Festival? Well, the guide they give you is 80% wrong and missing some very key details, the street performers didn't show up until around 6:00PM and the ones that did show up were either perverts or talentless bums. The "street fair" only spanned half a block instead of six, the shows were spaced so sporadically and were placed in such random places that you could only see two or three, the prices of the shows were all of a sudden marked up for no reason, nothing started on time, and none of the booths were even remotely interesting, except for the one selling overpriced ice cream (there were NO Snickers bars in it! >_<).

BTW, I still think that ID thing was stupid. I mean, I don't need an ID to get second-hand smoke, do I (and I got plenty of that today)? I don't need an ID to stand next to a kid who does drugs, do I?

Next time, I'll just take my mom's advice and go to the Calgary Zoo. At least I know there won't be any polar bears there because they all died of starvation and poor sanitary conditions. :/

*clings to Watson*

Fringe

Yes, I had to be the one to do this.

Disappointing, very, very much so. As you all know, we arrived by 1:30 pm, and by 2, I was an endless, gaping hole of apathy--I just didn't care anymore. :(

What happened to Fringe being supposedly lively, bustling with entertainment, and good gosh, ENTERTAINING?? >_< I'm promptly sending my thoughts to the Fringe "Contact Us" addresses, though it'll be annoying to write each separate concern for each department. But that WILL NOT discourage me, as even my apathy gave way to utter cold despair.

Yes, after some thought, the one event highlight directly of Fringe (rather than that brilliant time outside it, on the LRT with that crazy, bug smearing child, and the playground), was the production, Do You Bite Your Thumb At Me, Sir?!, because in retrospect, the actors were funny, had some terrific fight scenes, and their personas were endearing (and sympathetic, of course Pat most so).

There wasn't much else that was amazingly outstanding that was not the play--the rest is just a series ranked as, bad, not as bad, and adequate. >_> SIGH, I have such despair still at this sad excuse for Fringe in Calgary.

Get Together, anyone?

Hey hey!!!

Natrix called me today with news about us going to the Fringe Fest, but sadly, I have a shift at Starbucks on that day.... I'm trying to get it covered by a co-worker, but so far, to no avail.

But Natrix calling me gave me a thought: would any of you being willing to do another Yearly Homage? We don't need to get together specficially at anyone's house, but we could go and grab a lunch or something or a cup of coffee at Starbucks!!! or we could hang out at the Oolong Tea House down in Kensington (I love that place... see... i don't hate all non-Starbucks coffee places, I just hate Second Cup! and plus, Oolong is all about tea and Starbucks is all about coffee... so if the two combine forces, they could TAKE OVER THE WORLD OF CAFFINATED BEVERAGES!!!!)

So ya... my schedule is all clear from Aug 21-Aug 29... phone/email/post to give me some feedback!

Btw, I've seen results with your coffees and here are some of my view points on the "Sure Thing" coffees:

Natrix: Caffè Verona is an AWESOME coffee... it's my most favourite bold coffee and it goes great with chocolate (apparently it's the Starbucks endorsed dessert/dinner-party coffee. Gold Coast has a bit more of a flavour punch to it and I find it a dash too powerful. I haven't tried, but I've heard that Arabian Mocha Java and French Roast are too bold for most tastes.

Nyx: They don't ALL sound bad.... Caffè Verona, i forgot to mention is very eloquent tasting (how can a coffee be "eloquent" tasting? Well... once you try a wide range of coffees, you'll be able to tell the difference). Yukon roast I prefer over Gold coast and I just tried Italian Roast and it's not that bad... it's not as bold as others that I've tried and is very mellow tasting. (Btw... maybe the goddess of indie films, procrastination and cyncism would be better than "mung bean juice"... but that's just me)

Twill: I think you would enjoy House Blend... it's very smooth and mellow... it's not as light as Breakfast, but it's not as overpoweringly bold as say... Sumatra... very nice in between coffee..... I think that if you had the opprutunity to do a coffee tasting with me, you would also like my personal favourite: Serena Organic Blend!!!!

Sigh... see what working at Starbucks for a summer has done to me? Maybe I should takeover Nyx's position as coffee goddess and become "god of the earth, humanity and all creation, demi-god of coffee!!!!" (why demi-god, you ask? Well to be fair, I want to ensure that everyone has the same number of things that they are responsible for in their god/goddess titles.... so if I have four things in my title, it would only be right add one more thing to everyone else's titles... and I wouldn't be too happy with memorizing a new set of titles after they've been ingrained in my head for so many years....)

What kind of Starbucks coffee is for you?

Glepts!

I've just been poking around on the Starbucks website (YAY!) and I found this uber-funky quiz to match what kind of coffees would be my favourites... and here the results!!!!!!

Sure Thing:
Caffè Verona®, Gold Coast Blend®
Adventurous:
Kenya, Sumatra, Sulawesi
Daring:
French Roast, Arabian Mocha Java

Verona's one my favourites and Sulawesi is a new found favourite... but Arabia is just too musty and dark and I haven't tried French roast yet (LE GASP!!!)

Do the quiz as well! it's at:
http://www.starbucks.com/ourcoffees/tmatcher.asp?category%5Fname=Coffee+Taste+Matcher

And if the results make no sense to you... just as me! your CERTIFIED Starbucks Barista! (btw... the reason why I capsed CERTIFIED was because I recently recieved my certificate stating that I'm done my training and that I'm now a certified barista!!!! YAY!!!!!)

The Music Sounds Better With You

House M.D. + House Music = LOVE.

Does anybody want to come to the Calgary Fringe Festival with me? On 17th Ave., date to be determined, but preferrably not Aug. 14th or 15th. I'M GOING TO SEE A MIME! :D Well, hopefully.

And I still can't see what I'm typing, so I hope this turns out okay.
